How we rank the best free bet offers for sports betting fans
Free bets in the UK come from both established and new betting sites looking to attract new customers. It’s also easy to look at an offer with a generous free bet offer and flashy promotions and take the plunge, but sometimes all is not as it seems. What are the other requirements to getting that offer and landing some cold hard real-life cash? We take a look at the free bet offers provided by innumerable UK bookmakers, to bring sports betting fans the best possible deals.
Offer type | First and foremost, what is the type of the free bet? Some bookies offer up to £100 as a welcome sign up offer for new customers, so the value of the free bet offered is crucial when we consider which ones to recommend. Higher-value free bonus bets are more appealing to bettors but they aren’t always created equal. |
Wagering requirements | That brings us on to wagering requirements. Free bets are always subject to ‘wagering requirements’, which basically means you need to wager a certain amount of times before you can convert any bonus funds into cash funds. For example, with a bonus of £100 at a 3x wagering requirement, you’d need to wager at least £300 before that bonus is converted to cash funds. We look at the wagering requirements for all free bets offers to make sure we recommend the best ones. |
Minimum deposit | Most free bet offers require an initial deposit followed by a qualifying bet to receive your bonus funds. We’ll recommend the ones with the best value when it comes to minimum deposit, recommending ones that are reasonable or low minimum deposit amounts. |
Minimum odds | Minimum odds restrictions determine which bets qualify for the free bet. They are put in place so that the bookies can provide a good deal while mitigating their own risk. They don’t want winning to be a foregone conclusion (otherwise it wouldn’t be gambling), but they want to give punters a good deal at the same time. Minimum odds are usually around 1/2 (1.50). Bookies offering free bets with competitive or better odds will be looked upon favourably. |
Expiration dates | Like any other promotion, free bets tend to have an expiration date before they go vanish. Usually, this requires you placing your qualifying bet AND using your subsequent free bet. This is sometimes around up to 30 days but they can vary, so we’ll recommend the ones with the best deals. |
Betting markets | The variety of betting markets to which the free bet applies is essential. Free bets tend to be very specific about which sporting events or markets the bettor can wager one, so we’ll do a deep dive into which betting sites offer the most flexibility. Most betting markets are typically available, but not always. We’ll call out when this happens. |
New vs. existing players | You’ll find an abundance of free bets for new players as UK-based bookies want to lure them in, but existing players need a fair shot at landing some winnings as well. We’ll recommend bookies that offer decent deals for both parties, calling out where new players and existing customers can get the best deals. This is an important one for bookies to rank highly. |
Promo codes | It’s usually a more pleasant experience when a bettor doesn’t need to use a promo code to secure the free bet. Sometimes it’s inescapable, but whether or not a bonus code is required to claim the free bet can impact their experience, particularly if they have to navigate to various screens. In a nutshell, offers that do not require bonus codes are more user-friendly and sites that don’t use them may outperform others. |
Reviews and reputation | The customer knows best. That’s why we take a deep dive into all of the customer reviews available to understand the strengths and weaknesses of the betting site, keeping an eye out for elements related to free bets. The experience of the customer is a direct insight into what works and what doesn’t, which bookies is great and which…aren’t so much. |
Additional terms | There are always a bit of a laundry list of terms and conditions, not just wagering requirements and deposit amounts. These should always be clear and visible, while we’ll also review additional specific terms, such as geographic restrictions or payment method exclusions, which can affect how scroll-stopping a free bet offer really is. |

What are Free Bets?
During your betting experience, you may have stumbled across the term “free bet.” Perhaps you’ve been offered a free bet during the sign up process, or maybe you’ve otherwise seen a bonus or free bet balance on your account and have wondered what this means and how to unlock free bets. Well, don’t worry - we’ll get into that shortly.
Simply put, as the name would suggest, free bets are bets that you can place for free on numerous different betting markets, depending on the specific terms of the bet. A free bet is generally offered on real money terms, meaning that you can potentially win real money if your free bet is successful. This naturally makes free bets an incredibly popular offer for many people since they allow you to place a bet without risking your own money.
Free bet offers come in various different forms. Some of the most well-known are as new player welcome bonuses, but they can also be given out as loyalty rewards for existing customers. Some free bets are even given for special promotions such as daily free reward spinners and the like.
While free bets sound like an amazing opportunity to place a bet or two without risking your cash, keep in mind that there are usually terms and conditions attached, such as minimum odds or specific events on which the free bet can be used (don’t worry - we’ll look at this shortly). As such, it’s essential to read the fine print before placing a wager if you want to qualify for a free bet offer.
Of course, it should be noted here that while free bets usually refer to a type of promotion where players are able to place a bet for free to win real money, this term can also occasionally be used to refer to bets placed for free on unique markets or challenges. We’ll look at these in a little more detail later on.
Free Bet Welcome Offers
Perhaps the most well-known free bet offers are those offered to new players joining a bookie for the first time, otherwise known as “Welcome Offers.” These offers are designed to encourage bettors to join new sportsbooks and provide an incentive to switch to a new bookie over a previous provider.
Loyalty Free Bet Offers
Welcome offers may be lucrative opportunities for many bettors, but that doesn’t mean you should give up on your old favourite bookmakers; indeed, many will offer a range of ongoing free bet offers that help reward customers for their loyalty. These ongoing offers are most often provided on big events, such as major football matches or horse racing events like the Grand National.
What Events are Free Bets Offered On?
By now, we’ve considered some of the key things you should know about what free bets are - but what events are these offered on? Well, there’s technically no limit to the types of events that free bets can be offered on. However, there are several markets that most often have free bet offers, including:
- Horse and greyhound racing free bets
- Football free bets
- Tennis free bets
- Golf free bets
- Motor racing free bets
- Virtual sports free bets
These are just a few examples of the different sports markets that free bets are most often offered on, but there’s no exhaustive list; indeed, a bookmaker can offer a free bet on any sports market they decide! Given this thought, if you have a favourite sport, be sure to keep in mind that a bookie may be able to offer free bets for these markets. In fact, some free bets may not even have specific market limitations, so you could use the free bet or free bet balance on any type of sport!
Different Types of Free Bet Offers
By now, we’ve clarified what free bets are and that they’re generally available on most different types of sport markets. However, it’s important to clarify here that free bets are not created equal, and there are many different types of free bets and free bet offers to be aware of. These can vary significantly depending on the type of sport and the value of the free bet. Nevertheless, some of the most common types of free bets include the following.
No Requirement Free Bets
The simplest type of free bets are those that come with no requirements whatsoever; they’re simply credited to your account as either a free bet or bonus funds. Usually, these will be pretty low in value - a couple of pounds perhaps - but they don’t require you to deposit or place a bet of any kind. Usually, you’ll be informed of these by email or in a notification message on your account. However, some will also be offered to all promo-eligible members.
Example
These free bets don’t really need much of an explanation, but we’ll cover an example of how they work anyway. After checking your emails, you might notice that a bookie has contacted you offering a completely free £2 bet - no strings attached! Loading up your online account, you’ll usually then find the bet either waiting in your account or needing to be opted into. After doing so, when placing your next bet, you’ll typically see the option to use your £2 free bet in the betting slip.
Free Bet if You Win A Game of Luck
A similar promotion to the “no requirement free bets” is a free bet when you win a free game of luck. These promos are increasingly common and generally use a spinning wheel of chance, which is often available for free every day; check this, though, as some bookies will occasionally require you to have placed a bet the day before to unlock a free spin.
With these free bets, simply spin the wheel of chance and you’ll receive either no prize or a reward. If the reward is a free bet, it will generally be quite low in value but should be credited to your account to use.
Example
A common example of this is when favourite bookie sends you a message about a free to play daily prize wheel. After spinning the wheel, you land on a free bet prize, which allows you to place a free bet. Usually, these will be low in value (a couple of pounds), similarto the no requirement free bets.
Free Bet After You Deposit
Another common type of free bet is the deposit-locked bet, which is a common method used for welcome offers. These free bets are credited after you place a qualifying deposit; they often have a lot more terms, so be sure to keep these in mind.
Examples
When looking for a new bookmaker, you stumble across a welcome offer that promises £30 in free bets after you make your first qualifying £10 deposit. These free bets are sometimes credited instantly as a whole bet, but in other cases, they may be credited in instalments over time (e.g., a free £10 bet each day for three days after qualifying).
Another example of this could be a deposit matched free bet. In these cases, you might be offered something along the lines of “We’ll match your deposit up to £50.” In these cases, the amount of free bets you receive will depend on the amount you deposit, up to a maximum limit.
Free Bet After You Bet
Going a step further than the “free bet after you deposit” offer, the free bet after you place a qualifying bet is perhaps even more common among welcome offers. These offers will usually require you to bet on certain markets or at particular odds, so be sure to check the terms.
Example
After finding a new bookmaker, you notice they are offering a welcome offer: “Get £50 in free bets after you deposit and stake £20.” These sorts of offers do require you to actually place a bet, which is why they are more common than deposit matches usually. Once you have staked the qualifying amount, you’ll typically then receive your free bets either incrementally or in one large go.
Free Bet if Your Bet Wins/Loses
Another common promo, and one that’s seen both as a welcome offer and a loyalty offer, is the free bet if your bet wins or loses. This is pretty self explanatory, and it will usually match your initial bet as a free bet, so it’s easy to see why these offers are popular. Free bets if your bet loses are often especially beloved among bettors as it provides a back-up if your bet loses; in contrast, a free bet if your selection wins is much less likely to happen, but does mean that you’ll effectively win two prizes if your choice comes in!
Examples
Suppose a bookmaker offers a “£10 matched free bet if your bet loses” offer. In this case, if you bet £10 on a qualifying market and your bet goes on to lose, you’ll receive a free bet worth £10. Usually, this will be matched to your bet value (e.g. if you bet £10, you’ll receive a £10 free bet). This provides a “second chance” to bet on another market if your first bet doesn’t go so well.
Another example of this is the “£10 matched free bet if your bet wins.” In other words, if your bet wins, you’ll not only get your full payout but you’ll also receive a free bet to try again! This is much less likely to occur, of course, especially if betting on markets such as horse racing where there are numerous options. Still, it can be great fun to not only win the race but get to have another punt for free!
Free Bet if [Insert Event Here] Happens
Similar to the “free bet if you win/lose” offer, many bookies will offer a free bet if a certain event happens. These will usually cover very specific scenarios, such as a certain player scoring, a certain number of goals, a team going several points up in a match before losing, or a horse finishing second to the starting price favourite. Given this, they’re much less likely to occur given the often specific circumstances; nonetheless, they’re still fun opportunities when they do come in successfully!
Example
You’re betting on a horse racing event and the bookmaker has a free bet offer if the horse comes second to the starting price favourite. During the race, your horse finishes in second place, and the SP favourite comes in first. This will result in a free bet credited to your account.
Another common scenario occurs when bookies offer a free bet if your team goes two goals ahead then loses. Of course, this is a pretty uncommon scenario, as it’s not easy for a losing team to claw it back after they’ve gotten so far behind. Still, it’s a nice consolation if your team looked to be doing well then went on to lose their momentum, with the rival coming in to claim victory after a sloppy start.
Free Bet if You Stake on Casino
Many bookies these days also offer online slots and casino games, and as such, it’s not uncommon to get an offer promising a free bet after you stake a certain amount on slots or casino games.
Example
As part of a promotion for a large event (e.g., the Grand National), a bookie offers a £2 free bet after you stake £10 on a promoted horse racing slot game. After staking the £10 (note - this is usually staking the amount, not losing it - i.e., you could stake £10 but win back £8), a £2 free bet to use on horse racing is then credited to your sportsbook account.
Free Bet Clubs
A final common form of free bet is awarded from free bet clubs, such as that offered by SkyBet. Free Bet Clubs typically require you to bet a certain amount during the course of a week; after doing so, you’ll be awarded free bets to use the following week on certain events.
Common Free Bet Terms and Conditions to Be Aware Of
With the aforementioned points in mind, it’s important to note that, if you have found a free bet offer you want to take advantage of, you’ll usually need to follow a selection of terms and conditions. These will often be pretty simple, but some free bets - especially those with higher values - may come with far more rigorous rules. So, be sure to read all of the terms and conditions thoroughly before placing a free bet, or you might find yourself missing out on the opportunity or even betting with real funds by mistake!
- Deposits by certain methods only. Most often associated with deposit bonuses, it’s not uncommon for bookmakers to restrict bonuses to debit card transactions only or certain online wallets. As such, always check your chosen payment method is supported as part of the promotion or you could miss out.
- Minimum odds. Usually, free bets will come with minimum odds terms, be it for a qualifying bet or on the free bet itself (e.g. the free bet might be credited after placing a qualifying bet at odds of 3/1 minimum). Placing a bet below these odds would mean you weren’t eligible for the free bet offer.
- Restricted markets or events. Usually, although not always, free bets are restricted to a particular market or event. For example, a free bet might be available only on horse racing markets; they could even be offered exclusively on a certain match or race (e.g. “get a free bet if your horse loses in the 1.50 Cheltenham” / “get a free bet if your team goes two goals ahead and loses in the 9.00 Manchester United vs. Liverpool”)
- Stake returned/not returned. Most free bets are provided on a stake not returned basis. This means that the free bet value will not be included in your winnings. While it doesn’t necessarily impact your free bet hugely, keep this in mind as you might end up winning less than you’d expected if the stake isn’t returned.
- Wagering requirements. Usually, most sports free bets will be without wagering requirements. However, in rare cases, you may need to wager any winnings from your free bet, so always double check this.
- Time limits. Many free bets will expire after a certain period of time. So, make sure to use your awarded free bet within the time limits set so you don’t lose them!
- No cashout. Often, free bets are only offered if your qualifying bet isn’t cashed out. Many free bets may also be provided on a no cashout basis, meaning you can’t necessarily cash out the free bet once you’ve placed it - you either win or lose!
Best Free Bets And betting Offers in the UK for 2025
BoyleSports - £30 in Free Bets

BoyleSports is one of the oldest and largest Irish bookmakers and has more than 70 shops in the UK in addition to the online betting site.
When you click on the promotions, a lengthy list of options comes up, which is a positive, but makes it hard to locate the welcome bonus. New UK customers who bet £10 with odds of 2.0 or more will get £30 in free bets and £10 to spend in the BoyleSports casino. An innovative feature that is exclusive to BoyleSports is the sliding menu of sports that you can tap to see which promotions you can use on certain events, which is really handy. More than 20 offers are active, half of them existing as horse racing promos. Punters get money back as a free bet if their horse comes second to the SP favourite, plus daily extra places races, and best odds guaranteed.
The all-sport acca loyalty seems to be the most popular bonus, as it can be used on any of the 44 sports and their pre-match markets. You will get a £5 free bet every time you place an acca with five legs or more, provided that the combined odds are 3/1 or greater. On top of that, there are boosts on all accas with at least 3 selections, the maximum boost being 100% when your bet has 20 folds or more.
You may have heard of the 2 Goals Ahead early payout, but BoyleSports also has a 12 Points Ahead version for 14 football leagues, including the English Championship, League One, Bundesliga, La Liga, and Scottish Premiership. You can also receive a free bet worth £5, £10, or £15 when you place a Premier League 3, 4, or 5 accas, respectively, with four selections or more each. Surprise cricket, golf, racing, and tennis promotions also regularly pop up.
BetTom - £10 in Free Bets

BetTom is based in East Sussex and has had a UK Gambling Commission license since 2024, as well as recently becoming supplied by software gambling firm EveryMatrix. Their main offer is the UK sports welcome bonus, which is the first bonus printed under their promotions page. Punters will get 50% of their money back on first-day losses, which will be rewarded as a free bet worth up to £25. However, there are a few terms to note should you be interested in the sign-up bonus. For one, you must place three bets worth £10 on different events with odds of 2.0 or greater. The sum of the stakes settled by midnight on the first day will be returned as a free bet. Also, you will get 10 free spins to use only on Big Bass Splash, with a 35x wagering requirement and a maximum payout of £50. They expire in one week. Hence, in total, the biggest potential reward from BetTom is £75.
The offer at BetTom is Best Odds Guaranteed, which is strangely capped at £100, whilst other bookmakers don't usually have a limit. This does apply to horse racing and greyhound racing and is only applicable for bets made the same day after 10 am. Ante-post bets are excluded.
Finally, the last offer worth discussing is the double result payout. Whether your horse is first past the post or another is declared the official winner, you will be paid out. This promotion is also capped but at an immense £5,000 each day.
BetTom may be new, but the free bet options are basic and underwhelming. This, coupled with the 31 sports and lack of enhanced odds, makes it quite average, but the mobile app for iOS and Android saves the day.
